Russia Out of World Cup 2022

Despite having one of the most successful World Cups in history, Russia may not be able to participate in 2022 in Qatar. The country’s President Vladimir Putin has been involved in waging war in Ukraine, and the country’s soccer authorities have been suspended from competitions. A CAS judge has confirmed that the country will not be part of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The international sporting community, including athletes, organizations, and clubs, has come to grips with the effects of the conflict on international competitions. FIFA and UEFA, the world’s two biggest soccer governing bodies, took immediate first steps after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. FIFA banned the Russian national team from international competitions, and UEFA suspended all Russian clubs from international competitions. It also banned the country’s national anthem from being played.

Russia’s national team was knocked out of the World Cup by eventual finalists Croatia in the quarter-finals. In the playoff process, Russia was expected to face Poland in a semi-final, but the Polish football federation refused to travel to Moscow. Instead, Russia will play Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. This was done because the team clash rule prevented Russia from playing Ukraine.

Russia’s appeal to FIFA and UEFA was rejected. FIFA argued that letting Russia compete could result in more boycotts. The Football Union of Russia, however, had a different view. They argued that allowing Russia to compete could result in irreparable and chaotic damage. In other words, letting Russia compete would give it more leverage in other sports.

Meanwhile, the Russian federation said it was “serious” about bidding for the UEFA European Championship in 2028 or 2032. But, it did not rule out the possibility of a World Cup game with Iran before that tournament.

The Football Union of Russia filed a request to freeze the FIFA ban on its member associations. The union also appealed against the Swedish Football Association and the Czech Football Association. However, it was not enough. The Russian football federation appealed to CAS, claiming that the FIFA decision was “incorrect.” The CAS said the decision was “correct,” but it did not grant the request to freeze the FIFA ban.

The Football Union of Russia also appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, claiming that FIFA did not follow the correct procedure. However, the CAS rejected the request and did not grant the appeal.

Aside from a ban from the World Cup, Russia is also being banned from international competitions in other sports. FIFA has also barred the Russian women’s national team from competing in the 2022 Women’s Euros. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has also called for the ban of Russian and Belarusian athletes.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has also announced that Russia will not be allowed to participate in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The CAS decision echoes a similar ruling by the European soccer governing body, UEFA.

Russia’s appeal to FIFA and the Football Union of Russia was rejected, but the country is not going anywhere. The Russian federation says it is serious about bidding for the European Championship in 2028 or 2032, and will continue to fight bans from international competitions.
