A financial institution’s routing number can be found on a number of different items, such as cheques. The routing number is generally composed of a three-digit financial institution number and a five-digit branch code. These numbers are encoded with magnetic ink on payment items like cheques. This process is known as MICR, or Magnetic Ink Character Recognition.
The number you use should be a three-digit code that resembles a bank’s name. This number should not be affected by the branch location or account number. It is also sorted alphabetically. Typically, it should be the first three digits of the institution’s account number.
TD Canada Trust’s institution number is 004. This number is the same no matter where you live or what branch you are in. If you’re unsure, you can check this number by speaking to a teller or calling customer service. The number will also be on the bottom of your cheque.
